The Calculated Erosion of a People’s Presence

The recent report by Israeli human rights group B’Tselem reveals a decades-long strategy to eradicate the Palestinian presence from the West Bank. This systematic dismantling of collective life has been unfolding under successive governments, with each accelerating its pace.

At first glance, the report’s findings may seem like isolated incidents – checkpoints stifling the economy, military operations leading to displacement, and arrests targeting activists. However, B’Tselem’s “Elimination Project” paints a more sinister picture: it is not just about demolitions or checkpoints but about deliberately erasing a people from their land.

The report points out that Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has entered an accelerated phase of this objective since late 2022, particularly after the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel in October 2023. This timing underscores how Israel uses external threats to justify internal measures aimed at consolidating control over the West Bank.

B’Tselem’s executive director, Yuli Novak, notes that Palestinians are living through a “single political project” that permeates every aspect of their lives. The report reveals five interconnected mechanisms used by Israel to advance its West Bank project. These mechanisms involve imposing violence, fear, and coercion through military operations and armed settler militias.

Between October 2023 and September 2026, at least 1,107 Palestinians lost their lives in Israeli attacks across the occupied West Bank. This staggering number highlights the brutal efficiency of Israel’s methods. Israel has also used its military to assist armed settlers in driving Palestinians from their land, expanding its presence in the territory. To date, 75 Palestinian communities have been forcibly displaced, and over 1,070,000 dunams (18 percent of the West Bank) have been seized by Israel as of July 2026.

Restricting Palestinians’ movement through checkpoints and roadblocks has also had devastating consequences for the economy. By the end of last year, there were 925 such obstacles documented throughout the territory. Unemployment among Palestinians rose from 13.1 percent in 2022 to over 31 percent in 2024.

Israel’s deliberate stifling of the West Bank’s economy is perhaps the most insidious mechanism. By restricting movement and limiting economic opportunities, Israel is not just displacing Palestinians but also undermining their ability to sustain themselves. This approach resembles historical colonial strategies aimed at breaking the backs of indigenous populations.

Lastly, Israel actively criminalizes political organizing by suppressing protests and arresting activists, students, and journalists. At least 60 Palestinian journalists working in the occupied West Bank have been arrested since the start of Israel’s genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023.

B’Tselem’s call to action is clear: the international community must stop viewing Israel’s violations as isolated incidents and end its complicity in these actions. It is imperative for governments and international institutions to use every means available under international law to protect Palestinians and dismantle Israel’s military rule and apartheid system.

The question remains: what will it take for the world to acknowledge this systematic elimination project? How many more testimonies, how many more families displaced, how much more violence before the international community takes action? The answer lies not in isolating individual incidents but in understanding the calculated erosion of a people’s presence.
