Europe Targeted by Spiralling Campaign of Sabotage and Russia is the Chief Suspect

The intensity of these attacks is unusual, according to Daniela Richterova of the Department of War Studies at King’s College. She attributes this surge to Moscow’s growing desperation in Ukraine, as Kyiv takes the war to Russian territory and begins to exact a toll on Russia’s military.
This campaign appears designed to pressure European countries into reining in their support for Ukraine. By raising the stakes and demonstrating its willingness to strike at key infrastructure, Moscow hopes to convince Europe to reduce its aid to Kyiv. This strategy is known as “coercive signalling.”
However, other analysts see a more sinister motive at play. Keir Giles from the Chatham House think tank believes that Russia is testing NATO’s limits, probing for weaknesses in European defenses. He warns that this campaign may be merely the prelude to a larger and more devastating assault on Europe.
The parallels with 2024 are striking: during that year, Russia was accused of orchestrating a parcel bomb plot targeting the UK and Poland. This was seen as a test run for something far more significant – a catastrophic attack designed to inflict mass casualties.
European leaders are on high alert, with Germany’s interior minister declaring Russia responsible for several incidents and Poland’s government warning of “many, many signals” pointing to Russian involvement. As attacks continue to pile up, the pressure on Europe to respond is growing.
NATO has been criticized for its sluggishness in addressing this threat, with some member states dragging their feet over collective defense commitments. Meanwhile, Russia’s proxies operate freely within the continent, using the cover of Europe’s porous borders and lax security measures to carry out their missions.
The implications are stark: if left unchecked, these sabotage attacks could have far-reaching consequences for European stability and security. They may also embolden other actors – including terrorist groups – to exploit the vacuum created by Russia’s aggression.
As Giles puts it, “Russia is probing the boundaries of what’s acceptable and collecting information on the results.” The question now is: how will Europe respond? The consequences of inaction would be catastrophic – not just for Ukraine, but for European security as a whole.
